Just Beneath The Surface
Other wordly... hell and heavenly... whatever philosophical words people used to describe their rollercoaster lives, I was at a loss for them. As I walked towards the front of the room to set down my completed test, I watched the pale blue of the test sheet hit the projector.
Strobe lights, flourescent colors, twinkling blue eyes compared to his pale blue shirt... I blinked back to reality to find Lon Sensei staring at me with a mapped smile. I quickly smiled back and turned around, seeing Jade in my vision. He glanced up from his test with wide blue eyes and smirked, looking back down to finish his test.
I passed by and back to my seat, resting my head on the cool surface of the polished wood desk. Why was that night so vivid in my head? I thought I'd forgotten that? But... nothing let me forget. I'd been so brave, and in such a rush, I let myself attack what hadn't exactly been mine. He accepted my attempt though. I meant no harm, or anything past what my secrecies were.
The rest of the hall bunched together as they forced through the doors to the main crowd. I squeezed out before the rush and found Misa, both of us heading to our next class. Or... our advising. It was a pretty pointless class, but we couldn't do much about it. I sat behind Kami, after having solved what needed to be. She was smiling and joking as normal. Things seemed to be going better.
I was appreciative, after my flawed mess up. I didn't have much time to talk here, so I figured I'd tell her after school when we walked home today. Raito was a little sleepy, so she'd probably take the shortcut home.
History went by with a breeze, and lunch had no effect. I stared over at the mess of kids waiting for lunch, until I found the one I was looking for. Only problem, X sat in the cafeteria. His eyes found mine and he smiled, while Kep stood in line with his back turned to the both of us, his posture annoyingly straight. For a guy, he looked like one of those students of perfection.
Until you got to know him. X locked and unlocked his knees rapidly as he waited for his turn to buy food, but I looked away and found the mystery of a boy I was looking for. He looked so placid, but his eyes were so electric they shouted his every emotion. I only wondered, if he was going to be at the carnival next week.
I wanted to ask him, but I had a thing about asking guys. It just...wasn't me. But I was pretty sure he had another girl in sights to ask...
"Ichi?" I blinked and snapped my head to see Sea staring at me, his eyes curious. Kep was standing beside X who was on my left. "Whoa... can't a girl have some space?" I asked with a shy nervous laugh. Sea smirked, "you know he left already." I watched X's eyes flicker from Sea to me, and then towards Kep.
Shit... my tongue formed a knot as I tried to evade tension. "They all ditched me not just Alec. We'll find our friends by the usual spot," I said smoothly, and smiled at both Kep and X. "I'll see you guys later?"
"Race to the locker!" Kep called with a smirk, and then a nasty look. I shot one back, before walking away.
"Chi, what's up? You looked a little pensive today," Kami speculated, her elongated stride keeping in step with mine. I glanced over and shrugged a little as we paced away from our ditch. "well, I'm a little stuck. And Sea almost screwed me over."
"How so?" I looked up at the sky, and watched the cloudless pale blue reflect back at me. Strobe lights, flourescent colors, twinkling eyes... I shook my head and just saw the twinkling eyes stare at me, body against mine in the tight space of the crowd. "CHI!" I jumped, and then laughed it away. "Sorry... my mind won't let me forget that night. Anyway, at lunch, Serk was there, and X was. You can already see where this goes."
"So Sea made it obvious, and X overheard the conversation?" Kami guessed with an arch of her brow, her bangs swinging with the tilt of her head. I nodded, and touched my headband, sighing. "Sea was innocent, but I just don't want them questioning."
"I see... so you're stuck on Serk then huh?"
"Sadly enough. He's not the brightest star in the sky, but he's got potential. Sporty, fun, popular, sweet to everyone, and drug free!"
"Holy hell he's perfect! NOT! There's got to be one flaw besides being a dumbass in class." I chuckled, only because he was so bad at school. "Well... he does tend to talk a lot. And I mean, more than a girl should. More than anyone should. It's probably why his voice goes up two octaves by the end of the day."
Kami sniggered, and shook her bracelets into place on her wrist, sniffing the thick, humid air as we neared our splitting point. "So hows things with you?" I questioned quickly. "Eh, I'm still balancing life. We've got too much to look forward to besides guys. Sick parties, the carnival... halloween," she grinned as the second to last one came up. We did plan outfits for this one, and they looked amazing.
I smiled and nodded, "yeah... I'm pretty sure I can go dateless another year."
"But if he asks you...?"
"Which won't happen, I'll most likely be in the center..." I tried to get the image in my head. Strobe lights, flourescent colors, twinkling blue eyes... holding me.
A small smile lit my face as we stood under the shade. My outfit matched his eyes. "Oh no, Chi... you're daydreaming again."
"It's not gonna happen Kami..." I said with a dreamy sigh. "Whatever chica, you've been hooked. Talk me up later! Peace!" Kami turned the corner, and I kept going towards my house.
It was hard for him to see me, because I was just behind the glass. It was like looking through the water, and only seeing your reflection. I was just beneath the surface. And all he had to do was reach...
Strobe lights, flourescent colors, twinkling blue eyes, and a girl...
